Rajyashree Ramesh
PERFORMER-CHOREOGRAPHER
performer
Grace, precision, and subtle
expression
Critically acclaimed hallmarks of Rajyashree’s presentations have been deep expressivity, rhythmic precision, graceful dynamics, and a penchant for narrative improvisation. These factors, also inherently integral to the learning and practise of Indian performing arts Nāṭya, continue to influence her choreographies. In 1993 she began to conceive ensemble works with young upcoming dancers, at that time an important step from the solo traditional repertoire to thematic formats. With the founding of Rasika Dance Theatre International in 1996 she has been charting out Nāṭya’s potential for cross-cultural, multi-genre stage productions through performative dialogues with artists of varied backgrounds. Many of her choreographic concepts have been funded by state cultural departments or conceived as commissioned work. As a guest choreographer she has worked in multi-media multimodal productions.
Some signature productions:
  • ”Goethe's Iphigenie" with actress Erika Eller (premiere funded by District Cultural Department of Berlin-Schoneberg in 1998 with repeat performances in several formats)
  • “Rainbow Melodies” with Indian musicians (funded by District Cultural Department of Berlin- Steglitz-Zehlendorf 2001)
  • “Jalakrida - the Water Play” (commissioned for Asia-Pacific Weeks 2005)
  • “Körpersprachen-Mundarten” (with international artists, funded by District Cultural Department of Berlin-Schöneberg in 2007)
  • “Epos-Ramayana” (choreographic assignment for State Theater Chemnitz 2004-2005)
  • “Rasa - the dewdrop of experience” (Indo-Lithuanian production 2018)
  • “Sommernachtstraum” (choreographic assignment for Possible World e.V. 2017-2019)
  • “The Cosmic Body” (multi-genre work-in-progress, here in a Nāṭya-revisited Tanz-Text-Ton Format, process and premiere funded by District Cultural Department of Berlin Tempelhof-Schöneberg 2022 with repeat performances at the Tagore Centre Berlin 2022, Bad Kreuznach 2024 and Aktionstag Tanz Berlin)
