Where teaching dance becomes
educating through dance.
Central and unique to Rajyashree’s pioneering teaching over more than four decades has been both an in-depth facilitation of the traditional vocabulary and repertoire of Bharatanatyam, and a harnessing of the educating potential dance holds.
During an initial 14-year invited teaching assignment at the Community College Berlin-Steglitz from 1980’s to 1990’s Rajyashree developed innovative teaching methodologies to enable learning for the many non-Indian dance seekers her courses attracted.
These methodologies were further refined in intensive course formats she offered at her own Academy for Performing Arts since the 1990’s. The dancers of varied origins groomed here for both stage and teaching have been claiming a niche for themselves in the dance world or successfully incorporating their knowledge into their respective professions. She also expanded the cross-cultural pedagogical scope of dance in several outreach projects. These included invited assignments for dance and creative dance theatre workshops based on the overarching performing arts understanding in Nāṭya for various target groups in schools, cultural organisations, libraries and museums (such as Ethnological Museums in Berlin and Leipzig).
Apart from this, she introduced new approaches to Nāṭya both as choreographer and facilitator during teaching assignments (Die Etage State School for Acting, Mime and Dance, DanzArte Ballet- und Tanzschule) and professional training programmes for actors, narrators and movement analysts. Her work with differently abled persons has further added valuably to her collective experiences.
Enhanced by an in-depth study of human movement that was supported by academic research Rajyashree’s teaching methodologies continue to facilitate learning for all age groups, backgrounds and capacities. Yet there is much to be done in terms of decolonising perspectives on dance and enabling equity in knowledge enunciation.
After a 13-year tenure as Docent and Coordinator for Dance at the Global Music Academy Berlin between 2011-2024, where she developed several courses successfully, Rajyashree focuses today on advanced professional training formats through a first of its kind transcultural transdisciplinary Dance and Movement Studies programme in various modules.
Her pathbreaking research-based methodologies such as “FasciaNatya”, “CoreConcepts” and “CosmicBody” offer specialised studies for performers, dance pedagogues, dance/movement therapists, actors and other movement professionals. They also serve as movement facilitation tools for non-professional learners seeking effective movement. See
Grace, precision, subtle expression, eloquence in communication, clarity in concept, a penchant for narratives and an inherent knowledge of music.
